Background
The sixteen S100 proteins show very divergent patterns of cell and tissue specific expression, subcellular localizations and relocations, post translational modifications, and affinities for Ca2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+, consistent with their pleiotropic intracellular and extracellular functions. Up to 40 target proteins interact with S100 proteins, with 15 specifically identified as target proteins for S100A1 alone. Not surprisingly, researchers propose many functional roles for S100 proteins, and believe that altered S100 expression may play a role in such human disorders as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiomyopathies, inflammation, diabetes, and allergies.
