Background
Thrombin is the active enzyme that splits fibrinogen into fibrin in final stage of blood coagulation. It is generated from its circulating inactive precursor, prothrombin, by the action of factor Xa aided by factor Va, phospholipid and calcium ions. Thrombin is a glycoprotein formed by a 6 kDa alpha chain linked by a disulfide bridge to a 31 kDa beta chain which carries the serine protease catalytic site.
