Significance and Uses
Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) is synthesized from dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DgLA). PGE1 is the major prostaglandin in semen. Biological actions of PGE1 include vasodilation, proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells and platelet aggregation. In addition, PGE1 has been shown to have insulin-like actions. The cyclic nucleotide cAMP is involved in the receptor-mediated effects of this prostaglandin. Abnormal levels of PGE1 are found in a number of disease states including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus erythematosus. PGE1 has therapeutic applications in thrombic and ischemic diseases.
