Background
The AP-2 family of transcription factors consists of AP-2alpha, AP-2beta, AP-2gamma, and AP-2delta. These proteins are all encoded by separate genes. AP-2 proteins homo- and heterodimerize via a unique C-terminal helix-span-helix motif. AP-2 proteins appear to have important overlapping, yet distinct functions during embryonic development and malignant transformation. AP-2 proteins have also been shown to regulate many genes related to growth and differentiation, including the proto-oncogene ErbB2, Estrogen receptor, E-cadherin, and the cell cycle regulator p21.
