Background
DJ-1 protein, which was cloned from a HeLa cell library, has 189 amino acids and when expressed can weakly transform NIH3T3 cells. Transformation by DJ-1 can be enhanced by co-transfection with H-Ras or Myc. The expression of DJ-1 is induced by growth signals and it is translocated from the cytoplasm to the nucleus during the S phase, although no nuclear localization signals are present. Northern blotting has shown that DJ-1 is ubiquitously expressed in various human tissues.
