Background
c-Jun, a component of the AP1 transcriptional apparatus, forms homo/heterodimers with Jun, Fos, ATF, or other trancriptional factors through its leucine zipper domain. The activity of c-Jun is enhanced upon by phosphorylation of serine 63 and serine 73 residues by Jnk (c-Jun N-Terminal Kinase). Signals relayed by Jnk through c-Jun regulate a range of cellular processes including cell proliferation, tumorigenesis, apoptosis, and embryonic development. Studies have shown that c-Jun plays an important role in neuronal apoptosis, regeneration, and protection.
