Background
Neutrophil elastase is a serine proteinase of the primary granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes which is released upon activation and is essential for migration of neutrophils through connective tissue, phagocytosis, and host defense against invading microorganisms. Neutrophil elastase can readily solubilize extracellular matrix, and is believed to be important in the pathogenesis of pulmonary emphysema, acute respiratory distress syndrome, glomerulonephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other inflammatory disorders.
