Background
DNase II is a nuclease that mediates chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation associated with apoptotic cell death. The DNase II gene encodes a 40 kDa proenzyme that is proteolytically cleaved to generate a mature enzyme consisting of two non-identical subunit chains of 32 kDa (alpha) and 12 kDa (beta). DNase II is ubiquitously expressed in human tissues and localizes to the lysosme where it hydrolyzes DNA under acidic conditions.
