Background
SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier), also known as Sentrin, is a recently identified family of proteins that are post-translationally attached to substrate proteins in a process termed sumoylation. SUMO-1 and the closest homologs SUMO-2 and SUMO-3 bind to and regulate a host of mammalian proteins including RanGAP1, Mdm2, c-Jun, Fas, p53, and CaMK, as well as viral and yeast proteins. Sumoylation regulates protein stabilization and subcellular localization, gene expression, genome replication, and nucleocytoplasmic signaling and transport.
