Background
S100 proteins belong to the family of calcium binding proteins such as Calmodulin and Troponin C. Members of the S100 protein family are multifunctional proteins implicated in the regulation of a variety of cellular activities and have both intracellular and extracellular activities. S100 proteins have no enzymatic activity and interact with several effector proteins within cells to regulate enzyme activities, dynamics of cytoskeleton constituents, cell growth and differentiation and Ca2+ homeostasis.
