Background
Beta-amyloid/Abeta is the major protein component of neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques, major neruopthological hallmarks of Alzheimer?s disease (AD). Abeta occurs in two predominant forms with different COOH-termini, Abeta40 and Abeta42. Abeta is generated by proteolytic cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) at two sites by distinct secretases, the beta-site secretase BACE, and the multi-subunit gamma-secretase composed of presenilin, nicastrin, Aph-1, and Pen-2.
