Background
Taj/TROY is a membrane protein of 423 amino acids with characteristic cysteine-rich motifs in the extracellular domain, and a TRAF2 binding sequence in the cytoplasmic domain. Taj/TROY is a member of the tumour necrosis factor receptor superfamily that lacks a death domain in its cytoplasmic tail. Taj-TROY is able to induce apoptosis independent of DNA fragmentation and caspase activation, and activates both JNK and NFkappaB pathways, possibly via binding of TRAF family members such as TRAF6. TROY mRNA is highly expressed in brain, prostate and embryo, and moderately expressed in the heart, lung, and liver.
