Background
MBP (Myelin basic protein) is a hydrophilic protein, which accounts for 30% of the proteins in the myelin sheath of the central nervous system. There are at least 6 different MBP isoforms that are produced by alternative splicing. MBP is the target of many posttranslational modifications, including N-terminal acetylation, arginine methylation, phosphorylation by serine/threonine kinases, and Gln deamidation. Altered MBP levels and MBP autoantibodies are also associated with Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer?s disease, ALS, Autism and peripheral neuropathy.
