Background
p27Kip1 is a member of the CDK inhibitors (CKIs) that binds to cyclin/CDK complexes and arrests cell division. In general, p27Kip1 expression is highest in quiescent cells and falls as cells reenter the cell cycle. The p27Kip1 protein was first identified as an inhibitor of cyclin E-CDK2. Several anti-proliferative signals, including cell-to-cell contact, the withdrawal of cytokines, the withdrawal of mitogens, and exposure to cAMP result in p27Kip1 accumulation.
